I am a Certified Court Interpreter, certified by the State of Washington to interpret from English to Cantonese and from Cantonese to English. I have been certified since early 1992 when the certification examination was held by the State of Washington for the first time. But I have served as an interpreter in court proceedings since 1988. In order to obtain this certification, I took a written examination and an oral examination administered by the State of Washington.

My court certification qualifies me to interpret in court proceedings in the state courts of Washington. This involves both consecutive interpretation and sight translation. Consecutive interpretation means that I provide an interpretation of the entire court proceedings, including translating either from English to Cantonese or from Cantonese to English, all statements made by all participants, such as attorneys, witnesses and the judge. Sight translation means that I orally translate documents written in either English or Chinese. In the Chinese language there are numerous spoken dialects, including Cantonese and Mandarin, but only one written language.

I have served as an interpreter in court proceedings in the State of Washington approximately 900 times since 1988. In addition, I have served as an interpreter in federal court proceedings in the State of Washington approximately 200 times since 1988. Also, I have served as an interpreter for depositions taken in civil proceedings approximately 1,000 times since 1988. I have also provided translation services for about 50 different lawyers and the Department of Social and Health Services of the State of Washington.

I lived in Hong Kong from age nine until age 28, when I moved to the United States. I have resided in the United States since February 1984. My native language is Cantonese. I studied English from age five until age 21, when I received a Bachelor of Social Science degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. I am fluent, both in speaking and writing, in English, Chinese, Cantonese and Mandarin.

In the summer of 1993, I completed a five-day training course on advanced simultaneous interpretation, presented by the Office of Administrator for the Courts of the State of Washington.
